I am an estate planning lawyer and it’s my job to tell people to do their estate plan. But it goes much deeper than it’s just my job.
My mother died when I was 17 years old. She would not have thought that she had much and she would have thought that it would be morbid to do an estate plan. She probably had a superstition that she would die if she did do an estate plan. Well, she did die, much too soon. But we have no control over these things.
All I can say to you is that things would have been much easier for me if she had done some kind of estate plan. Estate planning is not just for the rich or the elderly, it’s for everyone. It’s hard to think about your death, but I think that it’s harder for your loved ones if you don’t think about it. And I’m not saying that we should be depressed and think about our death all the time.
I’m suggesting that when we can face the reality of our mortality, we then can really live.
